Top 5 tips to succeed in UPSC – Civil Services (Main) Exam

Posted on October 16, 2018 by Successlynk

If you are preparing for the UPSC Civil Services Main Exam, a strategy plays an important role in writing the exam and securing better rank. Here are the top tips to prepare for your exam.

  1. Have a good start: UPSC has prescribed syllabus for Prelims, Mains and Interview. Understanding of UPSC syllabus and exam pattern is the first step in preparing for the exam. Know the cut-off. Check SuccessLynk to know the syllabus, important dates, updates and much more. Remember that preparation for UPSC requires a lot of reading. So apart from the NCERT books, get some essential books to study. Check the article ‘Leading reference books for UPSC exams‘ from the link: http://blog.successlynk.com/leading-reference-books-upsc-exams/. Also, make newspaper reading a habit
  2. Have a strategy: Analyse the previous years’ question papers. Identify the key areas in each. Then based on your observations, develop a strategy for the different sections. Make a timetable accordingly. Carefully balance your time among the optional subjects and the General Studies papers and cover the syllabus. Remember that though questions are asked from the prescribed syllabus, most of them are related to current affairs. So make notes on current affairs which can be linked to the syllabus. Though concepts and theories are important, your study should include the latest news and events.
  3. Study well: Mains exam questions are all descriptive which require you to have good knowledge and writing skills. You need to understand the depth for optional subjects and the width for general studies. Analyse history as a process and not merely in events. Connect the dots to find linkages. Prepare your own notes for the major topics. Have deeper perspective of various issues. For example write down the causes of a movement, whether it was successful or failure, reasons, its contribution to the country’s growth etc. Stay focused in your study. Avoid reading wild things. Be careful in choosing Coaching Center as many of them have promising advertisements but provide out-dated notes. Instead, build your analytical abilities and reduce your dependency on spoon-feeding by coaching institutes. Expand your knowledge.
  4. Revise and practice: UPSC syllabus is vast. So you need to have many timely revisions to be able to recall during the exam. Moreover, Mains exam requires you to actually write answers. In the given time and space, you should be able to write a correct, lucid and neat answer. For that you need a lot of writing practice. Structure your answers and present them well. Remember to take mock tests regularly. Go for Mains Test Series. This will help you to manage your time well apart from giving you ample practice to face the exam confidently on the actual day.
  5. Take care of your well-being: Get inspired by watching the topper’s interviews. Work hard. But do not forget to take good care of your overall well-being. Take care of your health and be away from all negative. Include fruits, vegetables and sufficient protein in your diet. Do light exercises regularly. Drink enough water.

Take all the possible precautions so that you are always healthy. Be positive and stay cool.Your vision to serve the nation is highly appreciable. Hard work and persistence will make you to surely succeed. All the best!
