Answer to What can we do quickly but daily to increase our mind sharpness for understanding complex theories and tough numerical or problems that appear in competitive examinations? by RN Sreenathan
The mind snoops on topics that offer security to the physical body, pleasure to the senses, and a kick to the ego!
Nothing is impossible for the mind!
The mind has the power to achieve everything in the universe. But in a majority of people, it fails miserably. Why is it so?
What happens if a precious diamond is given to a monkey?
Similarly, the human being does not realize the extraordinary power of the mind and he/she squanders the precious gift like an ill-trained driver driving a powerful sports car!
Yesterday, I was watching a YouTube video where an airplane prematurely took off though the pilots did not want it to do so!
Is it not surprising?
Yes, it’s indeed! Later they found, there was a wrong setting in its panel, because of that it did not obey the pilots but executed the autopilot job.
You may be surprised to know that the same thing is happening with our mind. We have set it on autopilot and have given it a blue print according to which it acts. It does its assigned job.
What is the solution?
Certain controls of the autopilot should be controlled by the pilot. We are the pilots of our minds but we have lost control over it!
Our minds run on some presumptions which have become the mind’s intrinsic quality.
What are these assumptions of the mind?
The mind has been programmed to preserve the physical body. This is the first built-in programme in every living being. Every animal runs away when it is threatened.
Right from our childhood, our minds have been programmed to provide fodder to the senses and derive pleasure out of it. How many number of lunches and dinners we might have eaten in our lives, even then, every next lunch or dinner is an exciting prospect! How many movies must have we watched in our lives? We are excited about watching the next movie with the sole intention of providing means for the enticement of the senses.
How many times, we have been applauded? But we want another applause so that our ego gets a kick!
Human beings are preserving the same sense of security to the physical body as animals do. Nobody wants to die! This is the basic program of our software ‘mind’
Let us analyze why we want to take a competitive examination?
We take the examination with the sole idea of gaining power and money. Even before we start studying for the competitive examination, our minds are already imagining the resultant power and money.
We study only if a particular question is expected in the examination. The subconscious part of our mind is engaged in finding out, ‘how important this question is? What if this question appears in the exam? What if I pass in the examination? What will be my first posting and where can it be?
These are the essential distractions that we face while preparing for the examination because of the sensitization of our mind to these prefabricated and recorded expectations.
Take the examples of Einstein, Ravindranath Tagore, or Shakespeare. They were so wedded to their subject that everything else would have appeared unimportant to them.
Everyone of us has the ability to achieve the best. Only a very few of us become successful because of our identification with the biased mind. The biased mind becomes stressed as it is already subconsciously calculating the pros and cons of the success or failure.
At this moment, we can focus our sharpened mind and solve any knotty problem if we overcome our slavery to the built in tendencies of our mind. Become Einstein, you can solve any mathematical or physics problem. Become Ravindranath Tagore, wonderful original literary ideas will flow non-stop.
Start thinking differently. Let the mind become your vassal. You can make the mind to drop all its preconceived ideas of security of body, pleasure of senses, and ego kick.
You have to give the mind a good lesson on reality.
- How can I give security to the body when none of the organs which form the body are under my control? Do I have control over my heart, lung, brain or liver? Then what security we are talking about? Has any individual till date won the battle against death? Then what security we are talking about? Come to your senses and follow my suggestion of enjoying learning some thing new every moment and finally aiming at answering the most invaluable question, ‘who am I?’
- How many times have we eaten food? We still want to eat the same food for pleasure. There is nothing novel in this repetition. All sensual pleasures are repetitions. How long can we repeat them? There is an end to these repetitions. Why can’t you be satisfied with the pleasures which you have already enjoyed? Most of the adult experiences are only repetitions. Let us analyze and see the root of these sense enjoyments. What if my ‘self’ is the cause of this happiness? If this were to be the case, I would enjoy studying the subjects in the course, even before passing my competitive examination. I would start enjoying the very examination itself. My enjoyment begins here and lies in learning something new and novel.
- The ego gets a kick when somebody praises and suddenly dips to its low when somebody dislikes us. How can I fall to such a mean idea? There must be something in me which judges praise and dislike. What if I am that? I become the master.
We are the masters of our mind. There is nothing that cannot be achieved. The problem is that, ‘we want a particular result even before any attempt’.
Let us observe our mind and note down all its idiosyncrasies. Let us make it purge its inbuilt tendencies. Let us be prepared to enjoy learning for learning’s sake. Success is assured.
