You are ambitious and have set goals. You dream to achieve your goals and live a life of accomplishment. But the toughest part is taking that first step. So many questions creep in our minds and we keep saying, “I’ll do it someday– but not now.” We will be resisting the possible situations that may cause some kind of discomfort or fear. Such feelings often stem from a past unpleasant experience. So we tend put off the action steps to accomplish the goal. We feel safe and comfortable where we are, doing what we have always been doing. In other words, we’ll try to be in our comfort zone. Many people find it difficult to change their mind set and hence continue with their old ways.
But if you move out of comfort zone and start doing things, you will be unleashing your potential and accomplishing wonderful things. You will be exploring the unfamiliar or taking a small risk that could push you towards your goals. There are some techniques that will help you to step out of your comfort zone to accomplish wondrous things.
1. Embrace uncomfortable situations: Change often brings fear and uncertainty. Start analyzing your fears. Get to rational thinking. Ask yourself why shouldn’t I proceed with this uncomfortable and fearful next step? Ask yourself questions such as what problems do I have to face? How can I tackle them? Allow yourself put through uncomfortable situations to figure out solutions. Try out different ways to find solutions. For example, make it a habit to get up early and study in the morning hours. Initially, you may find it difficult. But after a few days, you will get used to it. Or you may want to remember a number of names. Use memory techniques instead of learning by rote method. Be creative to find solutions to your problems
2. Do not believe when people say you cannot do: The human brain is very smart. If you push through mental barriers, you can learn. If you get a negative feedback, stop for a moment. Do not get reactive or offended. Take that feedback as constructive advice that helps you to improve. For example, someone says that it’s very difficult to clear the exam you are aiming to pass. When you hear that comment, do not think of competition or toughness of the exam. Instead imagine that person giving you a gift to achieve your fullest potential.
3. Make it a habit to try out new things: Make it clear to yourself that new things are safe. Keep doing things in new ways or do unfamiliar things. This helps you to get bolder. For example, try out new ways of studying. Watch videos and documentaries related to your subjects. Go out and get books from library. Subscribe to newsletters for some sites that are informative about your goals. Take online tests from SuccessLynk for practice.
4. Start small: Start by setting small goals. This technique helps you to discover new skills and abilities that you might have, but have not known before. After the accomplishment of these small goals, you get more confident to accomplish little bigger things. By making a habit of accomplishing bigger goals every time you achieve something, you will eventually reach your full potential. Small goals eventually lead to the big win. For example, if you are not good at Quants, and want to improve your score, first test yourself to know where you are standing. Suppose your score is around 30%, then you need to know the topics where you need to focus. Target to achieve 40%. Start with a topic. Study its concepts completely, revise and solve a number of problems in that topic. Then test yourself. If you have scored 40% or more, you can set a bigger target this time, say 50%. Repeat this way till you score above 90%.
The uncomfortable zone helps you to strengthen your spirit. Change begins at the end of your comfort zone. All the best!
