We all have 24 hours in a day. Some students respond to this fact with focus and purpose. Others just freak out. With the right approach, you can make use of your time efficiently, study better and relatively be stress-free.
Here are the proven tips for effectively managing your time.
Assess your time and devise time-table
Study your daily patterns and minimise time wastage. First observe yourself. Note down each and every activity of yours from dawn to dusk. This way, you’ll know how much time is wasted on pursuits other than study.Make a to-do list of all the tasks you need to accomplish for your study. Include the deadlines as well and note of how much time each task requires. Then devise a time-table based on realistic goals.See that you do not leave important tasks until the last minute.
Avoid setting steep goals
One of the greatest mistakes students often make while preparing a time-table is that they set steep goals to follow and make drastic changes to their lifestyle, which they cannot cope up with. Make your time-table more realistic. Have goals you can meet and allocate suitable time to your other day-to-day activities, while gradually decreasing it. Strictly implement your time-table as it will help you to structure yourself for the upcoming exam.
Avoid procrastination and distraction
Become more self-aware. Procrastination and distraction can happen when you feel stressed or when you feel an urge to do something else. But if you do not succumb to momentary temptation, you will be actually giving yourself more energy to focus on your work. Next time you hear a voice in your head telling you to “check your email, it might be important!”, or “Has anyone commented on my Facebook status”, resist the urge.Tell yourself that you’ll just resist it this one time. The urge simply passes once you acknowledge it for what it is. Also, block distracting websites, or block the Internet out altogether. Do not attend too many parties do things that you shouldn’t be doing. One reason for procrastination is aiming for perfection. In that case, just get started. It’s fine to be imperfect. For example, if you have a thick text book to read, it may look scary. Then just start by reading the table of contents, or the first page.Getting something done is better than doing nothing. Once you get started, you’ll find yourself to be more enthusiastic than before. The key here is‘just get to work!’
Study smart
The amount of focused study is more important than the number of hours of study. Study when you have least noise.Keep yourself alert. When you are fully alert, start your study with the most difficult or boring subject. Do not study similar subjects one after another. For example, study English after Maths rather than Physics. Use power reading techniques. For example, first get a general idea of the chapter by reading just the headings, sub-headings, introduction paragraph and summary. Then glance through every chapter to get the key ideas. Then read the entire chapter and understand the full explanation of the ideas. Highlight the key words. Use colours to highlight ideas, dates and other facts. Next, put your book aside and write down the major points of what you have read and make your notes in few words or sentences. This kind of immediate recall helps you to retain better. Next, think about the topic just studied and understand the importance of what you have read and its relationship with other topics you have learnt. After a few days or on weekends, test yourself on what you have learned throughout the week. Take up tests and quizzes that help you go through your notes again. These periodical reviews help you to retain for longer time. Revise at least 2-3 times before the exam.
