If you have qualified the prelims exam you are eligible to appear for the main exam. If this is your repeat attempt for the mains, here are a few things you need to avoid:
- Avoid deviating from syllabus:Follow the syllabus as prescribed by the UPSC as the questions asked will be asked from the syllabus. Read NCERT books to get good understanding of the basic concepts. Then you can move on to advanced concepts. Do not collect too many books, magazines and articles that you can’t handle. They may appear as mountains you couldn’t complete and may give youanxious moments. It is always best to follow 2-3 good books per as it also saves your precious time. - Avoid mugging up: While studying, do not do superficial study. Focus on understanding and grasping of various topics. While choosing the optional, consider your education, interests and your comfort level. Give equal importance to all sections of the exam during your preparation. Focus to improve your knowledge, reading and writing skills. Do not depend on coaching material to improve your writing skills. Many a times students tend to reproduce the same notes from coaching material and get poor marks. So read from authentic sources and prepare for the sections in the exam.
- Avoid inconsistency in preparation: You need to have consistency in your preparation, practice and revision. Solve previous question papers and practice papers. Take up mock tests. You will be more habituated to the exam pattern and will be able to manage your time better.
- Avoid insufficient writing practice:Do not keep off your writing practice till you are done with reading. The scope of UPSC syllabus is huge and you won’t be able to cover it in the last minute. The best practice is to write as soon as you read a topic.
- Avoid poor revision: You need to have a proper revision strategy to revise the syllabus at least 2-3 times before the exam. Have a study group with maximum of 2-3 friends. If the group is too big, you may tend to waste time more than do actual study.
There are no secrets to success. It is the result of preparation, hard work and learning from failure. Failure will never overtake you if your determination to succeed is strong enough. All the best!
