IBPS Specialist Officer has become an attractive career option for many individuals. The Common Written Test (CWE) is a pre-requisite to select Specialist Officers in the departments: Law, Marketing, Finance, HR, Agriculture Field Officer, Rajbhasha Adhikari and Information Technology.
Keep in mind that the level of questions has increased and so is the competition. Everyone works hard, but working hard in the right direction is what is required.
Here are some guaranteed tips that guide you in the right direction to succeed in prelims.
1. Know the exam fully
First know the syllabus and understand the preliminary exam pattern. The paper is of objective type. The pattern for Specialist Officers (Agriculture Field Officer, Marketing Officer (Scale I), HR/Personnel Officer, IT Officer Scale I) is:

You need to score the minimum cut off marks in each section as well as the overall cut off as decided by IBPS. The cut off marks vary according to the state and as per categories and will be declared after the exam. So be aware of the cut off marks of the previous year.
2. Prepare section-wise
As each section has individual cut off, it’s best to take up as many mock tests as you can. Successlynk gives you ample practice for each of these sections separately through online test series.
- Reasoning: If the concepts are clear, you can solve a problem in few seconds or else you’ll end up taking a lot of time for calculations. So first attempt high accuracy topics like classification, circular and linear seating arrangement, arrangement pattern, ordering and ranking, blood relations, distances, directions, analogy etc. Then attempt low to moderate accuracy topics such as series, coding and decoding, data sufficiency, syllogisms etc.
- English: For reading comprehension focus on passages on banking, finance, and economy. Pay special attention to sentence errors as the errors can be very minute. Improve your vocabulary. Read magazines and newspapers, watch English channels and movies, and speak in English with others.
- Quantitative aptitude: It is a time consuming section and you have to be fast in calculation, therefore use time saving techniques. All formulae should be on your fingertips, right from 6th to 10th class topics such as ratio, percentage, profit/loss, time & work, number system etc. Pay special attention to Data and Interpretation and Quadratic Equations. Topics like time & work, permutations & combinations may take more time and the questions can be twisted. So they can be done in the end. Remember BODMAS rule, memorise all tables, cubes and squares.
- General awareness: For this section, you need to read a lot on varied topics and increase your knowledge on Indian constitution, Indian economy, Government schemes, RBI policies, budget, general economics, current affairs, politics, banking sector, agriculture, sports, etc.
3. Shift to online tests
You can improve your speed and accuracy by practicing more. Shift your practice from the conventional paper and pen mode to online tests of Successlynk. This shifting will help you immensely because the prelims exam itself is in online mode. Soon after you complete a section, take up its corresponding mock test in Successlynk. You will also know the trends and the type of questions that may be asked. It also sharpens your skills and helps in revision.
4. Manage your time wisely during preparation and also during exam
During preparation, make a time table and follow it. See that most of the syllabus topics can be covered. You need to practice and analyse. Take up Successlynk mock tests for the practice. Instead of spending time to analyse and understand your weak and strong areas, just take the detailed performance report. You will know not only the weak and strong areas, but also know where you stand.
The exam has to be completed in the specific allotted time, so time-management is very crucial. First attempt those questions that require short time. This way, you will be able to attempt maximum questions in minimum time. If you think a question takes a lot of time, skip it and attempt it after you have answered other questions.
5. Take feedback and suggestions from experts
Take feedback from Successlynk. The performance report given by Successlynk will help you to understand your strong and weak areas, so you can focus and improvise your preparation. Also, ask the experts in Successlynk portal and take suggestions from them. It will help immensely in your preparation to keep you ahead of others.
For the selection and finalization of merit candidates, a cumulative score of the prelims, mains and the interview is considered. Hence prepare well and use effective tools. All the best!
