Here are the top tips that help you to get you through tier II.
- Understand the purpose of exam: The purpose of this test is first to see how informed the candidate is about key events happening in his/ her environment and what kind of opinion he/ she is able to form around these events. Secondly, the written communication skills of the students are assessed to see whether the candidate will be able to communicate properly and carry his/ her duties well. So prepare well keeping these in mind.
- Consider the current issues: Though SSC has not declared the topics, expect topics on current affairs, social issues, globalisation, burning problems, ecological issues, national interest etc. Be well prepared for essays on Indian economy, women empowerment, dowry system, gender equality, girl child, farmer condition, GST, terrorism etc., or any current issue.
- Structure your essay: For writing the essay, first put down the key points you want to convey. Once you have the core idea, write proper introduction to the topic. Then build the body of the essay where you have to write your points and the arguments supporting them. Finally write the conclusion. Keep the word count between 200-250 words. Keep in mind not to repeat the content. Try to use some idiom or quotation. Check the sentences for grammatical errors and spelling mistakes.
- Prepare for formal and informal letters: For letter writing, get the format right. In your letter, ensure that all aspects – to, from, subject, address, salutation – are in place. You may be asked to write formal letter for example, a leave letter to your boss or a letter to the bank manager requesting the closure of your bank account. Informal letter may include a letter to your father informing about your new job or a letter to your friend thanking him for his gift. Be careful about the tone of your letter. In your formal letter, do not use quotes or idioms and do not repeat content.
- Practice, practice, practice: Make a list of topics for which have to prepare for your essay and letters. For essays, jot down all points and start writing the essay. Similarly for letter writing, practice all the important formal letters including their formatting. Keep a timer and practice as if in real exam. You need not use highly technical terms in your letter. So do not worry to learn new words or increase your vocabulary just before the exam. Ensure correct grammar and sentence formation. See that the sentences convey the correct meaning you intend to present.
Success lies in efforts. Focus on improvising, you’ll get results. All the best!
