The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) conducts the Combined Defense Services (CDS) exam to select candidates into the Indian Military Academy (IMA) in Dehradun, Officers Training Academy (OTA) in Chennai, Naval Academy in Goa and the Air Force Academy in Hyderabad. You will have a written exam. Qualified candidates are called for the Interview (Intelligence and Personality Test) by the Service Selection Board (SSB). Then you’ll have to pass a medical test. CDSE Exam is conducted twice a year, Exam (I) in February and Exam (II) in November. Let’s look at the top tips to succeed in the exam.
1. Know the exam: Before you apply for the exam, know what exactly you are supposed to study. Find out the complete details of the exam. 2. Have a separate strategy for each subject: Next know how to study for CDS Exam. You’ll have to write English, General Knowledge and Elementary Mathematics papers. Have separate strategy for the three subjects. Prepare for those subjects on which you have a good hold.
For English, focus on Grammar and Vocabulary questions. Develop the habit of reading. Enhance your English writing, speaking and listening habits. Learn new words every day. Also, learn their antonyms and synonyms and know how to use them in sentences. Solve previous question papers.
For GK, prepare questions from the constitution, economy, politics, navy and military, current affairs etc. Read Newspapers daily and magazines regularly. Read C.D.S GK preparation books. Read basics from chemistry, physics, biology and geography and history. Prepare brief notes. Check previous question papers and see the pattern of occurrence of the questions.
For Mathematics, first master the important formulas and theorems. The standard of the question paper is almost similar to matriculation. Focus on Arithmetic, Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry etc. Practice more questions. Solve problems from mensuration, speed distance and time, number system, simplification, ratio-proportion, logarithm, profit loss and discount, simple interest and compound interest etc.
3. Practice well: The more you practice, the better. Solve previous question papers, the questions at the end of each topic and questions from different books. Take up online test series. 5. Avoid silly mistakes: On the exam day, reach the examination centre on time. Carry all the required documents such as the admit card, photographs etc. and stationery items. Do not carry anything that is NOT allowed. Take time to check all your answers before submitting the paper.
